Eli Vance, likely a Harvard graduate, worked in Sector C’s Anomalous Materials division at Black Mesa, living there with his wife Azian and daughter Alyx. During the Resonance Cascade, he assisted Gordon Freeman, sending him to the surface for help and activating the retinal scanner that enabled Gordon’s journey. Eli escaped the disaster with Alyx, but Azian was killed. He left Black Mesa with only his daughter, a family photo, and his wedding ring. After the Seven Hour War and the Combine takeover, Eli helped found the Resistance alongside Alyx, Isaac Kleiner, and Barney Calhoun. They established Black Mesa East near City 17, where Eli led research efforts. During their relocation, he lost his leg to a Bullsquid while helping Kleiner. At Black Mesa East, he raised Alyx, built Dog to protect her, co-developed teleportation technology with Kleiner and Judith Mossman, designed the Gravity Gun, and helped adapt vehicles for Resistance use. Eli was the first human to peacefully ally with the Vortigaunts, earning their trust and securing their support against the Combine. When Gordon returned years later, Eli attempted to reconnect teleportation systems between labs, but Gordon ultimately reached Black Mesa East on foot. His arrival triggered a Combine assault; Eli was captured and taken to Nova Prospekt. Gordon and Alyx rescued him, but Mossman—revealed as a double agent—teleported Eli to the Citadel. She later turned on Breen and helped Eli escape before the Citadel’s destruction. In Episode Two, Eli worked at White Forest on a rocket to shut down the Combine Superportal. After learning of the Borealis, he insisted it be destroyed to prevent another catastrophe like Black Mesa. He revealed knowledge of the G-Man, stating that the mysterious figure delivered the Xen crystal that caused the Resonance Cascade and had manipulated events, including Alyx’s survival. Eli intended to explain more but was interrupted. After the rocket launch successfully closed the Superportal, Eli expressed pride in Gordon, calling him like a son. Moments later, Combine Advisors attacked; Eli tried to defend Alyx but was killed before Gordon and Alyx could intervene. Five years earlier, Eli and Alyx uncovered information about a Combine “superweapon” known as the Vault. Captured and separated, Eli learned the Vault was actually a prison. Alyx later discovered it contained the G-Man, who showed her a vision of Eli’s future death and offered her the chance to prevent it. She accepted, altering the timeline. In the new timeline, Gordon awakens at White Forest to find Eli alive, the Advisor dead, and Alyx missing—taken by the G-Man in Gordon’s place. Realizing the true meaning of “unforeseen consequences,” Eli vows revenge and prepares to fight back alongside Gordon.
