At the age of 43, landowner Kirsanov is visited by his son Arkady, a recent university graduate, accompanied by the self-assured young doctor, Yevgeny Bazarov. Kirsanov's older brother, Pavel Petrovich, and Bazarov quickly develop mutual dislike.
